CLASSIC BEACH COVER UPS
We call them Classic because 1. they're timelessly lovely and 2. they're cut in the traditional poncho-style model. We offer them in solid colors, variations of solid colors--geometrics and color blocking, screen prints with embroidery and sequins and the super classic Batik Stamp.
The Island Planet Batik Stamp Cover Ups begin with white rayon fabric.
The white motifs are actually where the melted wax is stamped onto the material. The fabric is dyed after the wax dries, then is placed in the sun (the dyes are solar reactive so strong sunlight=strong colors), then boiled to remove the wax and revealing the white motif. A remarkable process really.
The mottled background effect (referred to as "smoke") is achieved by scrunching up the wet dyed material while it's drying in the hot sun. We offer these colors with four tropical motifs: hibiscus, palm trees, seashells and sunface.
This collection of Island Planet Beach Cover Ups are gracious, lovely and offered in solid colors as well as screen prints. Each is embroidered around the neckline, on the front and back, on the entire length of the sides and above the hand-knotted, fringed hem. All the embroidery is accented with sequins which are placed and sewn on by hand.
First, the soft white rayon is dyed or screen printed, then cut to the pattern. Then come the embroidery--not an automatic embroidery but a hands-on technique embroidering freestyle--and the sequins. Lastly, the garment is sewn and the fringe is knotted. Quite a process and a beauiful product! Enchanting on their own, they are elegant over the IP Pants!
